Carlos  Alejandro  Marulanda
  is an award-winning writer-director based out of Los Angeles, California. Born in Colombia, he made his way to California to dive head first into the world of filmmaking. His work focuses on narratives that follow characters on the edges of society and reality, dipping into the realms of the surreal and science fiction. He is fascinated by the power of images, the bold use of color and expressionistic sound design.

Carlos is a graduate of UCLA’s Screenwriting Program and has an MFA from SFSU in Directing and Cinematography.  His feature screenplay “Cancuncito”  was a semi-finalist in the Academy Nicholl competition and included in their list of “Top 50 Screenplays”, it won the “Advanced Screenplay Award” at UCLA, was awarded Second Place in the feature section of the Slamdance Screenplay Competiion and was selected as one of the ten finalists in the American Zoetrope Screenplay Contest.

In 2021 “Cancuncito” was awarded a two hundred fifty thousand dollar production grant by the prestigious FOCINE ("Support for the Production of Fiction Feature Films"), sponsored by the Mexican Ministry of Culture and the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE). In October 2021 Carlos began production on “Cancuncito” as his feature length directorial debut.

His feature length screenplay “Skin” was awarded the “Nate Wilson Joie de Vivre Award” at UCLA.  His short films have been screened at festivals around the world, and on national television.  

Currently he is completing post-production for “Cancuncito” while developing other feature length screenplays.
